In the original Cantus index, differentiae were identified by a two-digit system with a letter indicating the final pitch of each differentia and a number to distinguish between differentiae in the same mode with the same last note. differentiae that only vary in terms of repeated notes, liquescents, or neumation were distinguished by a lower-case letter in the "Extra" field.
